This highly inflected Italianate villa, a form usually favored for suburban or rural settings, seems slightly out of place here, plunked down on a tight, steep, urban lot. Masonry construction, here (and typical of the time) pressed brick with tight mortar joints, is further at odds with such a picturesque form. But it must have reconciled Gorham’s (1792-1869) longing for a stylish suburban seat with the convenience of a seven-block walk to the silver company he founded in 1818 and then located on North Main Street.

Jabez Gorham is the founder of the Gorham Manufacturing Company
